On behalf of the 2017 Mains Committee, I would like to sincerely thank everyone that participated in this year’s AGM. It is an important day for our organisation as we recognise the efforts of the 2017/18 Committee and welcome aboard the 2018/19 team.

2017 was a year of learning for many of us on the Committee and there were a lot of new ideas implemented in terms of events and administration of ANZA. ANZA has been in existence for more than 40 years and we want to honour the organisation’s traditions while adapting to changing market conditions.

We have had positive feedback on our new house activities like swim classes and bootcamp and for events like tropical nights. Our major events - ANZA Ball, Melbourne Cup and End of Year Bazaar - were well attended. We are going into our 2018/2019 calendar of events and activities with some valuable lessons and great excitement.

At the start of 2018 we had a few key Committee Members resign their positions due to leaving Jakarta or increased travel commitments. It is the nature of expat life and we are forever grateful for their contributions.

I would like to personally thank the remaining and new team members for filling those vacancies, ensuring that we could keep ANZA ticking along.

To the 2018 Committee, welcome! Thank you for stepping up to help and I look forward to working with you.

To our members, sponsors and community partners, I hope we can count on your continued support. ANZA is a community that is fun, inclusive and most importantly cares about those less fortunate.

Let’s make 2018 another successful year.

Today we hosted our first ever Easter Egg Hunt at ANZA House. It was a clear, sunny morning perfect for the children to run around the backyard.

Our Easter Basket decorating table was busy with budding artists preparing before the main event - the Big Egg Hunt. The children were very excited to get out and collect the chocolates scattered around the garden. The under-5s had a slight head-start before the older kids raced around.

It was all over in a matter of minutes. Unfortunately, some of the eggs softened in the warm weather, but that didn't seem to bother the kids as they filled their baskets.

While the kids were mainly focused on gobbling their chocolate, the adults enjoyed a tasty morning tea.

Congratulations to our raffle winners who took home some fantastic prizes from our event sponsors, including:

We hope all our guests enjoyed their morning and the sugar rush wore of quickly. Thank you to our guests and sponsors for their support and our volunteer helpers. The funds raised from this event will go towards our medical and student sponsorship programs.

Look out for more photos in our next issue of ANZA Berita magazine.

March 8 is International Women's Day. A global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.

The theme for #IWD2017 is #beboldforchange - a call to action for accelerating gender parity.

Here are three ideas our ANZA members can #beboldforchange:

    1. Give a young woman access to education through the ANZA Student Sponsorship Program

    2. Support one of the many businesses run by local women that feature at our Friday coffee mornings, Bazaars and in the ANZA Shop

For example: textiles by House of Diamonds, who employ at risk women giving them a path out of poverty.

Read more about House of Diamonds in ANZA Berita.

    3. Donate your unwanted goods to support

For example: Yayasan Rumah Kasih Karunia (the House of Grace) has been set up as a Safe House and training centre with help from Priscilla Hall Memorial Foundation to help sexually exploited young women in Jakarta learn new skills and find new pathways.
If you are leaving Jakarta or having a ‘turn out’ they can pick up your unwanted items for their Thrift Shop to sell with the money going back to support their House of Grace activities.

No matter your sphere of influence there are many ways you can advocate for gender parity. For more ideas visit www.internationalwomensday.com

It is often difficult to find a day and time when the University & College students currently sponsored by the ANZA Student Sponsorship Program can meet up with the SSP Team for the usual admin purposes (collecting fee payments, organising photos for the new school year, and handing over reports), so today the students were invited to ANZA House for a special pizza lunch.

As well as getting all the necessary admin done, it was a great opportunity for the students to meet up and swap handy tips and ideas, and for the SSP Team (Santi, Sylvia & Louise) to get to know them better too.

Many thanks to ANZA for the use of the House, the students were delighted to visit and see ANZA's centre of operations, even if it was on a Sunday when all is quiet!

Today the students at Dian Kasih School in Kalideres, West Jakarta, held an Open Day and an International Day rolled into one and invited ANZA to join them, as proceeds from the Australia section will be donated to the ANZA Student Sponsorship Program.

The school was decorated with beautiful murals representing all the countries, the students organised games and activities as well as all the on stage entertainment, and their parents helped to provide a wide variety of tasty global food choices.

Many thanks to all the students, parents, staff and visitors for an exciting and enjoyable day!

The Student Sponsorship Program Team has started the process of visiting all the schools in the program to see that our students are in school and also to add new ones who have started this year.  We also take photos of everyone so that our sponsors can see how their students have developed since the last school year.

Our first visit today was to SD MKGR, a small Elementary School originally founded to educate the children of people from the local flower market in Kebon Jeruk, West Jakarta.

It takes three of us to get the children in line and snap the photos (one recording the order on a master sheet, one to hold the backdrop, and one to wield the camera) which we will use for profiles and reports, plus the new ones for our annual Christmas Appeal (coming soon!).

Every child received a yummy Tim Tam for their trouble, so we proved very popular this morning!

Sponsors and any interested ANZA members who would like to join us on one of our visits are always welcome (though be prepared for early starts and traffic!), upcoming dates are:

    • 30 Sep - SD At Taqwa, Cakung, East Jakarta
    • 1 Oct - SMK PGRI 35, Cengkareng, North West Jakarta
    • 9 Oct - University & College Students visit ANZA House for pizza lunch
    • 10 Oct - SD MKGR (2nd Visit), Kebon Jeruk, West Jakarta
    • 12 Oct - SD & SMP Esti Bakti (1st Visit), Kapuk, North West Jakarta
    • 14 Oct - SD & SMP Esti Bakti (2nd Visit), Kapuk, North West Jakarta
